By the last week of September, the fig leaves on Burton Drive start to turn, the scarecrow crews begin staging their frames behind the Center for the Arts, and someone at Cutruzzola pours the first glass of new-vintage Riesling for trivia night. If you live between Cambria and San Simeon, this is the moment the calendar tightens. What looks like a single festival month from the outside is actually three overlapping events sharing the same six walkable blocks, and the residents who read the overlap correctly get a better October than the ones who treat each weekend as a separate errand.
This is a piece for people who already live here. Not a guide to Hearst Castle. A sequenced look at how the month layers, where the layers help each other, and where they collide.
Three Events, One Village
The obvious anchor is the Cambria Scarecrow Festival, running October 1 through 31, which transforms the town into a showcase of over 200 creative scarecrows lining the streets. Now in its 18th year, up from just 30 scarecrows when they first appeared in 2009. Locals know the drill: the figures appear from the East Village of Cambria to the West Village, along Moonstone Drive and throughout San Simeon, and a QR code on each one lets you vote for your favorite and enter to win a free night's stay in Cambria.
What is new this year sits underneath the scarecrows. The Central Coast Classico is a new, welcoming, non-competitive cycling festival launching in 2026, replacing the beloved annual Eroica California. It is a three-day festival in Cambria, with riders choosing between routes like the coastal Jade Ride or the adventurous Limestone Ride, winding through vineyards, rolling hills, and oceanfront landscapes. The Jade Route is a 38-mile ride along Highway 1 past the historic Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, meaning the peloton passes the same stretch of coast where the northernmost scarecrows stand.
And then, quieter but worth pinning to the calendar: the Cambria Film Festival hosts an outdoor screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Friday, October 9, 2026, at Parr Collective, part of the festival's 10th Anniversary run leading toward the full festival February 3–7, 2027.
Three events. One village. This is where planning matters.
Reading the Overlap
The scarecrows are the constant. Everything else is a layer on top of them.
Two practical consequences follow from that:
- The scarecrows are best in the first ten days and the last five. The middle of the month is when tour buses find the map on the Visit Cambria App and Main Street parking becomes a full-contact sport. If you live here, walk the East Village on the second or third morning of the month, when the displays are fresh and the coffee line at the West Village side is still short.
- The Classico weekend pulls foot traffic north. When the Jade Route riders return from Piedras Blancas, Moonstone Drive fills up with jerseys and rental vans. That is the weekend to eat inland. Reserve at Robin's on Burton Drive or at The Sow's Ear a week ahead. Skip the beach patios.
The Rocky Horror night at Parr Collective sits in a different category entirely: an evening event, contained, low logistics. It is the one October date on the list that you can decide to attend the morning of.
A Resident's Sequenced Weekend
Here is one way to run a Saturday during the first weekend of October, when the scarecrows are up but the crowd has not yet arrived.
Start early at The Hidden Kitchen in Cambria, which is open Saturdays and Sundays from 9 AM to 2 PM as a cozy, all-outdoor cafe, and lines form quickly once they open. Get in before 9:15 and you are eating by 9:30. Walk from there into the East Village to catch the first cluster of scarecrows before the display maps fully circulate.
Mid-morning, drift toward the Cambria Historical Museum. The annual Harvest Festival is held on the museum grounds and is a free event featuring live music, pumpkin decorating, face painting, family activities, art, rootbeer floats, taffy, and scarecrows. It is the closest thing October has to a town square moment, and it is unhurried in a way the later weekends are not.
Lunch is a call. If the Classico is not in town that weekend, Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill on the water reads correctly. If riders have arrived, pivot to Madeline's in the West Village, which offers an intimate dining experience with a touch of French elegance, or to Brydge, which is tucked away just off the main street with a constantly rotating menu built on the Central Coast's organic and micro-seasonal produce, tapas-style.
Afternoon belongs to the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve bluff trail, which quietly does the work of resetting the day after a village morning. The scarecrows do not follow you out there.
The best October in Cambria is not the one that hits every event. It is the one that reads the overlap and steps sideways when the crowd shows up.
Evening, if the calendar aligns, is Rocky Horror at Parr Collective on the 9th. If not, it is a table at The Sow's Ear for the signature flower pot bread, freshly baked and served warm, and a glass of something from Paso.
The Layer Locals Actually Live In
The festival calendar is the loud version of October. The version residents actually live in is quieter and repeats weekly.
Trivia at Cutruzzola
The vineyard hosts a monthly Trivia Night where you sip award-winning Riesling and Pinot Noir while competing for prizes in a lively, communal atmosphere, a midweek escape for people who enjoy friendly competition and exceptional local wine. It is one of the few October fixtures unaffected by scarecrow traffic. The room is small. Locals fill it.
Pilates at Stolo
Every Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30 AM, pilates instructor Rebecca Belsanti leads a class at Stolo Vineyards & Winery focused on core strength, balance, and flexibility, and you bring your yoga mat, a towel, and a yoga strap if desired. Practical, local, and largely invisible to visitors.
Concerts at Schooners in Cayucos
Twenty minutes down Highway 1, Schooners hosts free Beachside Live shows for the community, an eclectic mix of the Central Coast's best talent, with two shows every Saturday and Sunday through October. When Cambria is at maximum density, this is where residents go.
Winemaker dinners at Cambria Pines Lodge
The lodge runs an ongoing series of signature Winemaker's Dinners in its outdoor Pavilion Garden, elegant five-course experiences pairing dishes with a specific winery's collection, guided by a winery expert sharing tasting notes, tickets $130 per person plus tax, pre-purchase required. Worth knowing about before the December calendar closes in.
What October Signals About November
Two dates worth pinning to the fridge before Halloween ends.
The Morro Bay Maritime Festival is on October 10, 2026, from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Morro Bay Maritime Museum, with fish painting, knot tying, sandcastle building, and fishing games. It is a good south-county counterweight if you want a Saturday that does not involve scarecrows.
And the Cambria Christmas Market, inspired by Germany's traditional holiday markets, is open most nights from November 27 through December 31, closed November 30, December 1, 7-8, 14-15, and 24-25. If you host in December, book your holiday guests around those closure windows now. Every year, someone does not, and every year, that guest ends up at the Sea Otter Inn on the wrong Tuesday.
